A Yarnie Birthday

I recently had a (significant) birthday, and other than the fact that I had the flu on my actual birthday, it was an awesome birthday full of celebration.  I got lots of fun, generous gifts from family and friends, a couple of which will appeal to all you knitters out there.

Every year, Kristi gives me some handspun.  This year was no exception!  In the past, I have received sport weight 3-ply superwash merino in perfect fall colors.  This year, Kristi kept with the superwash merino theme, but the yarn is heavier — DK or worsted weight I would say — and delightfully squooshy.  I think this skein is destined to become a hat and/or mittens.  What do you think?  As I recall, this yarn came from some Yarn Wench roving.

Judy always manages to come up something special, too.  She gave me a skein of Schaefer Yarn Andrea in the Dian Fossey colorway.  OMG!  I wish you could touch this yarn.  It is a laceweight silk.  Unbelievably soft — like so soft it catches on the dry skin on my hands.  And the colors are so beautiful.  I am thinking a little shawl of some sort with this one.  It is variegated (greens, blues, grays), but not so much so that I can’t do something lacy with it and have it still work.

On a less fun note…  Thank you for all your support and concern for Boris.  We still don’t have a definitive diagnosis, and his health continues to decline.  However, he is still a happy dog and seems to be comfortable.  So, while our remaining time together will undoubtedly be too short, at least we can enjoy it.
