The Woolie Ewe in Plano, TX asked me to do an exclusive sock design for their shop using an exclusive colorway of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock. Since they are just the nicest folks ever, and, well, I have a weakness for Lorna’s Laces, I just had to say yes. The result? Gentle Currents.
Pam send me some Shepherd Sock in the Tree Frog colorway. I believe this color is exclusive to the Woolie Ewe. It is a really stunning mix of blues and yellow-greens. Knowing that Shepherd Sock will often stripe, I wanted to come up with a pattern that worked well with the stripes. The end result of experimentation is this simple diagonal lace pattern set off by a highly textured ribbing stitch.
The lace breaks up the stripes with just the slightest offset. The effect looks like sunlit ripples as water flows over mossy rocks and sand. The socks are knit from the top down and are not terribly complex to work. The trickiest part is that the beginning of the round continues to shift, but once you get going, you can see how the shifting happens.
Kits for the Gentle Currents socks are available here.
